January

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Well the first month of 2012 is nearly over. We are drawing closer to the wedding all the time and plans are back in motion again. I’ve made some work on the main invitations, which we just need to finalise the wording of and make minor tweaks to now. I’ve also upgraded my home system to a bit newer spec. It’s still not quite the system I had hoped for (and i5 or i7) however I’ve managed to make the change to a quad core systems with a good MB and high memory and it has had a noticable improvement on the speed. Ideally I’d like to add an SSD to the system next, however given current prices of these I may have to leave that for quite a while yet.

I did finally buy some new shoes (well..technically boots) yesterday however, which I like. They are (generally) comfortable, however the higher back with solid leather is grating on my left foot a little, particuarly whilst driving, so I’ll have to hope I can break that in before too long.

Sarah and I have both been enjoying playing Elder Scrolls: Skyrim quite a lot lately. It’s been a really enjoyable game and one of the best games I’ve played lately for overall experience. There are a huge number of side quests – so there is plenty to keep you occupied, there is an overall story arch which plays quite well, the game feels relatively immersive, and as a major extra boon to me – there a nice little extras you can do as a bit of a break from just battling – such as crafting things, smithing, enchanting, alchemy etc which just feels to make the story a lot more complete and life encompassing to me. I would highly recommend this game to anyone, however you’ll need a lot of time to fully complete it – which can only be a good thing for value.

Speaking of games we’ve been using a lot lately. Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 for the XBox kinect has been a wonderful work out/exercise game. It really gets me shattered after half an hour of continual work out and it really feels to push you (if you choose hard enough settings). I’m really glad we bought that ‘game’ as I’m hoping it will start to have real benefits to my health. We try to make use of it for at least half an hour two to three times a week.

Christmas 2011

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. Hope you all had a wonderful 2011 and are ready for 2012.

Thank you to everyone for their kind gifts this Christmas. I hope I got a chance to meet you all in person over the Christmas period, and I had a wonderful time with those whom I did manage to meet.

I get the feeling that (online / computer parts wise) After Christmas Sales don’t really seem to be a thing any more as the couple of items that I was watching and planning to get after Christmas with any money I got don’t seem to have changed in price at all. In fact one item I was watching (a Kinect mount from amazon.co.uk) has actually gone up in price to the point where amazon.co.uk isn’t cheaper than other places. Play.com for instance stocks the exact same item for cheaper with free delivery. Any how, I think I’m going to wait for a while until the prices settle back down again. I get the feeling the shops expect the post christmas rush to the shops to buy things and that some places have actually started to inflate their prices just after Christmas. I can only apply this thought to computer/gaming things however as that’s all I’ve been looking at. Clothes shops may still want rid of their ‘last years’ stock, but I’m not really looking for any new clothes right now :-) In the meantime I have pleanty of games that I’m really enjoying at the moment and are keeping me occupied most of the time :-) Skyrim being my current time consumer. I played the previous Elder Scrolls (oblivion) and loved it and I have to confess they have done a wonderful job with Skyrim (in my opinion) keeping the enjoyable aspects of the game alive.

Unfortunately this year I didn’t have enough holiday time spare to remain in Yorkshire for my brothers’ birthdays. It would have been lovely to see them and celebrate it with them, but with needing to carry days over to next year (on my holiday allowance from work) to cover the wedding in 2012 I just couldn’t take any longer off, which meant I only managed to spend around 3 days in Yorkshire this year for Christmas, but we did manage to use the time very well and got to see both my brothers and my parents quite a bit with in that time scale. Unfortunately Andy was in the Isle of Wight to see his parents in law (not that I blame him) so we didn’t get chance to have a catch up, plus both my grandparents were at opposite ends of the country visiting family (Grandpa up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and Grandma down in Milton Keynes area).

So now that Christmas is over and we’re starting 2012 plans will be back in motion for the wedding of the year. :-) There are still a few things to do, but nothing too major at least. Andy has started making some noises about stag do plans, which is great as (to be honest) I had completely forgotten about that with everything else going on at the moment. We have the smaller details to look at now, table decorations, seating plans, flowers, etc. I collected our marriage licence from the registry office earlier in December so we now have our official papers for getting married :-P

Photographers and colds

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Well I’m just getting over a bad cold at the moment. It hit me on Monday really and hit me quite hard, but it is starting to tail off finally, just in time for Sarah’s birthday party this weekend. I have a few special plans up my sleeve, although one of them looks like it won’t be possible at the moment as some key things I needed to be sent (as I don’t have it myself) has not arrived. Sorry I know that’s quite cryptic, but I know that Sarah reads my blog from time to time so I don’t want to spoil a surprise if it actually manages to happen.

Well, it’s been a slightly busy week this week (and will be for a few more weeks) as we begin our hunt for a wedding photographer. We have been to see a few different people now in order to get a good idea of what kind of photography style each does and what they offer and for how much. It’s also important to us that we get a photographer we get along with and someone we feel we like as a person as well as a photographer. We’re really hunting for people who are good at rapport / candid shots and can blend into the guests seamlessly and get good photos of the day. I’m not really a big fan of posed shots (I even try to avoid them in my own pictures) as they just seem like forced stills throughout the day, but unexpected / candid pictures feel to tell much more of a story to me. It shows people as they were at the time, much more relaxed and actually doing what they were doing on the day, not standing in a big crowd smiling at the cameraman (although we do want the traditional photos too). We also consider full copyright/ownership of ALL the digital photographs a must as part of the package, and have removed any photographers from the list who don’t offer that or aren’t willing to offer that. We have seen a couple of photographers now and both have been very good, but one stands out to us a lot more, however we have about another 10 to speak to at some point (one is even giving us a telephone meeting as they are in Dorset but cover all of the UK with no transport cost).

We also have Sarah’s birthday coming up tomorrow. I’m really happy that a lot of Sarah’s friends are able to make it to the party, so it should be great. Its the big 30 – so it has to be special as far as I am concerned. We’re going out for some cocktails for a few hours before heading over to a lovely Thai restaurant for an evening meal together. Then the end of the evening still remains unknown. It depends on the guests really. We could stay at the restaurant and drink, or head across the road to a bar or we could call it a night. I’m hoping to go snap happy for most of the evening though and take a huge number of pictures, so if I do actually remember to do that I’ll put the pictures on the website soon. My only problem really (with cameras) is that I am so fully involved and enjoying the evening itself that I don’t tend to think about stopping from time to time and getting a picture (plus it spoils the mood for me a little- if an exciting thing is happening to be stood back a bit trying to picture it rather than enjoying it and getting excited with it too). Still I know everyone (myself included – and I certainly hope Sarah included) is going to have a wonderful evening.

2011 is here

Happy 2011 everyone.

Well a new year is here full of a new full year of work and a new set of holiday allowances :-) Far more importantly though – Sarah’s birthday is coming up moderately soon (well… 31st Jan anyway) so I need to find myself some time to pop off into the city to go shopping for a birthday present for Sarah. I have a good idea what to get here this year, however since she reads this blog (occasionally) I shaln’t say what I’m planning to get her just yet. :-P (nice try Sar).

Well the year has really kicked off for us now. We’ve had to pop back to the venue to look at different rooms as the wedding coordinator was concerned that the room we were origionally shown and offered may be too big for us and leave people rattling around a little bit in there. However we’ve been offered the beautiful dining room to use, which would (obviously) be closed off to any other guests and then reopened as the restaurant later in the day once we have finished our meal. This also has the advantage that we will be in the main building for the whole day rather than having the ceremony in the main building then walking outside to the separate function suite we were previously offered. It also means people are a lot closer to their rooms if they want to pop back during the evening for anything, or for when they slump off to bed in the early hours of the morning.

It’s been all go with choir as well at the start of the year, with an emergency committee meeting in order to decide upon a new pianist for the choir (as our previous pianist handed in her notice and finished at the end of 2010). It was a very close vote (literally 1 vote in it) however we’ve made our decision. It has the potential to be a little more of a gamble in my opinion (even though its where my vote lay) however it has the potential to be better in the long run. I’m not usually a gambling person however, and we could really have done with an extra week in order to see how our applicants developed and took on feedback from their audition rehearsal – however we unfortunately didn’t have the time available to us to do this. Still. The decision has now been made, and we’ll have to hope it all works out.
