Birthday coming up soon

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Only 12 more days until my birthday now :-) I’m going out for drinks on the Thursday of next week, then heading out for a meal on the Friday evening, driving up north to see family Friday evening and then a meal out with family on the Saturday – so I’m certainly getting my times worth for my birthday this year (it would appear :-D ). I’ll be taking a lot of pictures on the different days and will upload them to the website (especially since uploading to the website is a built in feature of my phone now). Looking forward to everything at the moment though – I’ll have to make sure not to go too mad with any of the days however as I dont want to undo all of the hard work I’ve put into dieting so far. I’ve lost a whole BMI point since I started checking my measurements (which wasnt at the start of the diet) and have lost around 1st in weight since that time too, so all in all I think it is going rather well :-) I am getting the occasional craving (usually for creamy items – like Mac&Cheese – which I don’t even usually eat – and Spagetti Carbonara) but they aren’t especially powerful cravings so I’m not finding it too bad keeping away from them. I’m also happy to have found (a while ago) that the ‘Zero’ versions of soft drinks are allowed in the diet too. I always used to drink zero anyway so I really like the flavours and they almost add in a dessert/treats feel to the diet without actually adding on a load of calories.

Sarah and I have signed up for our first couple of St John duties, the first of which is coming up at the end of the month as we are coving the second half of the cricket at Edgebaston cricket ground on Saturday 27th August. I’m a little nervous about our first duty – I mean, I think we are medically prepared for it and everything, but it’s still the daunting task of getting used to how we are supposed to react to certain situations with regards to ‘red tape’ and dealing with real situations rather than example situations in which everyone is co-operative and happy to sit down or lay on the floor :-) Still – I shall let you know how it goes. I’m looking at picking up a pair of steel toe capped boots if possible too to prevent anyone standing on my toes or anything :-) Sarah’s dad mentioned that he may have a couple of spare pairs from when he worked at Triplex (glass factory) so I’ll have to check his shoe size :-D We also have our AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training here at work this Wednesday which should be interesting. It’s a SJA course too – so once I have passed the course for work it will also count towards my training with SJA. Sarah is also on the course here at work too so will get it marked as completed for her too :-)

We also have the next LAN party coming up at the end of the month too. Stu and Phil will be back over with their PS3s and TVs to play Brink in 4 player over the Sunday evening through to the bank holiday Monday (28th – 29th August) which should be good fun. Its been a little while since our last LAN party – however with Sarah having an accountancy exam at the end of this week, and my birthday being the weekend after – this is the closest we could arrange one (which is handy as we’ll also be going on holiday to France during September, so that will be a more difficult month to try to plan a LAN party in :-)

V Day

Happy Valentines day everyone, and a special Happy Valentines Day to my darling Sarah xxx

Well I have a busy evening planned of a special valentines day dinner at home, plus a present (which I really hope has arrived in time – it’s due to be delivered today :-S). I can’t really say too much on here as I know Sarah reads this too, but I hope she has a wonderful Valentines day. I’m in the middle of opening a constant stream of sweetness from Sarah. She is sending me cards/gifts at set intervals throughout the day – they keep appearing in my letterbox at work :-) So far I’ve had a lovely card, some lovehearts (sweets) and another card full of really sweet poetry. My next installment is not due for another few hours yet.
I could do with leaving around 4:30 today to try to give me a slight edge over the crowds that will be at the supermarket later today, then I need to come back to pick Sarah up. however I also need to go to the post office at lunch in order to post an item that I’ve sold via Amazon – so I can’t really delay that.

The company that were supplying dad’s Christmas present hat (which had to delay the original order due to supplier issues – has now completely cancelled and refunded the order – IN FEBRUARY), so I’ve re-ordered a different hat which dad likes from urbanexcess.com which I immediately noticed I had ordered in the wrong size, however their badly designed website offers no ability to cancel the order or modify the order even though the error was noticied within seconds of ordering, their customer services department were friendly although useless (as the poor company design means sales doesnt have any real contact with the warehouse) and so i’ve had to wait until the hat has been delivered to immediately return the product for an exchange. What a complete waste of time which could have been averted with a simple ‘cancel order’ or ‘modify order’ option on the website (which could be easily disabled on their end once the item had gone into pick in progress – you know. The basic feature pretty much EVERY other web company in existance offers).

In Wien

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Hey everyone,

We are currently sat in a Starbucks in Vienna with free WiFi overlooking the Staatsoper on our last day (so we have our bags with us which is why we aren’t looking around the city :-D ). We’ve had a great holiday and managed to see pretty much everything we came out to see, which has been great. The weather has held out for us most of the holiday as well. Its been pretty cold at times, but nearly always dry (and the only 2 showers we had were light). It snowed overnight last night (on our final evening here) but most of the snow has gone by morning, its just on top of buildings and cars. Unlike snow in the UK, nothing changes at all here, everything just carries on as usual despite the snow :-P

We’ve taken a good number of pictures which I shall be looking at uploading to the website when I get home and have a faster internet connection which may cope with it :-) I’ll also try to put my Movember pictures online too. It’s been a bit weird having my moustache during our holiday, but it has helped keep my upper lip warm :-) It’s been very Christmasy at times here too, with lots of Christmas markets and lights around the city. Plenty of Gluhwein and Punsch, Schnitzel, Beer and cakes :-) But you can see all that on the photos soon I’m sure. I’m going to hand over to Sar to write anything she likes now, will blog here again soon.

Alex xx

It’s our last few hours in Vienna and I’m a little sad.  I’ll miss the beautiful buildings and  the hustle and bustle of the city.   Like Alex mentioned,  we’ve seen everything we hoped to….plus much, much more.   We’ve averaged between 3-4 attractions per day![Have a look at the blisters on my feet to confirm this - Alex]   Vienna is quite a compact city so we walked to and from all-but-one attraction.   We must have covered miles in our week away.   It’s certainly taken it’s toll on our feet.   I think a pedicure, manicure and massage are needed when we get home!

I’m glad we have a huge collection of photographs to bring back home (though I suspect we’ll bore people rigid with over 200 of them!!).   I also have a big fat tummy to bring home also.   The food and drink here is beautiful,  but it’s fried, rich and full of cream.   I’m craving a salad!

I am in some ways looking forward to going home.   I love new experiences,  but I miss the familiarity of home.  I certainly miss looking at a menu (or food in a supermarket) and knowing what it is.   It’ll be wonderful to see family and friends again and have a good catch up.  I’m especially missing Mits and Tosca.  I dread to think what sort of welcome we’ll get.  In my head they’ll be really glad to see us and it’ll be time for lots of fuss.   Knowing them,  it’ll be an hour or so of the cold shoulder, then perhaps,  if they are hungry,  a little fuss :-)

See you all soon
