Back to work

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Well, its back to work again after Christmas holiday now. Christmas kicked off very well the weekend before Christmas when Sarah’s parents had us over to their house for an early Christmas celebration (as we were away over the actual Christmas period in Yorkshire). We had a wonderful evening with her parents that weekend and Christmas really started for me at that point (until which it had just been another week at work really – apart from the decorations).  Sarah and I had a lovely time up in Yorkshire seeing most of my family during the Christmas period. Including a fun game of Bar Billiards with parents on Christmas Day, and a wonderful parents and brothers get together on Boxing Day over at Damon’s house. We don’t get everyone together in the same room very often so its a really wonderful time when we do manage to – so a big thank you to parents for having us over the Christmas period and to my brothers for arranging (and attending :-D ) the family get together.

Thank you to everyone for their Christmas presents and Christmas cards/wishes. It’s been a wonderful year, and it has been the 2nd Christmas together for Sarah and I, with many more to come :-) We have a year of saving coming up now (at least a year in fact) with Wedding things to save up for (etc). We have a small pot of ‘luxury items’ money saved up (mostly from Argos cards we ‘bought off ourselves’ and some remaining Argos cards) with which to buy things that we want (rather than need) but otherwise we shall be looking to entertain ourselves in the house as cheaply as possible this year I think. Besides - once the Christmas tree comes down and we have some space available once again I have my piano to be practicing.

We are hoping to move to a slightly larger property at some point later this year (2 bedrooms and no dining room is just getting too small – even though we love the area we are currently in). So 3 bedrooms and some permanent eating space (a dining room, or a kitchen/diner or a living room/diner) is a must. Then ideal extras (but they are very much extras) would be a study, a garage, and a downstairs toilet (probably in that order as well – personally). Keeping the cost low is our main priority however as we dont want to be paying much more in rent than we currently are. We would also like to stay in roughly the same area we are (within a few miles radius around ourselves anyway). Found an ideal place with all the above plus all extras just down the road from Sarah’s parents house for around the same we are paying now – however found it in November, and we are contracted in until later this year at our current place – and as lovely as it was we couldnt afford to pay 2 rents and move early.

In Wien

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Hey everyone,

We are currently sat in a Starbucks in Vienna with free WiFi overlooking the Staatsoper on our last day (so we have our bags with us which is why we aren’t looking around the city :-D ). We’ve had a great holiday and managed to see pretty much everything we came out to see, which has been great. The weather has held out for us most of the holiday as well. Its been pretty cold at times, but nearly always dry (and the only 2 showers we had were light). It snowed overnight last night (on our final evening here) but most of the snow has gone by morning, its just on top of buildings and cars. Unlike snow in the UK, nothing changes at all here, everything just carries on as usual despite the snow :-P

We’ve taken a good number of pictures which I shall be looking at uploading to the website when I get home and have a faster internet connection which may cope with it :-) I’ll also try to put my Movember pictures online too. It’s been a bit weird having my moustache during our holiday, but it has helped keep my upper lip warm :-) It’s been very Christmasy at times here too, with lots of Christmas markets and lights around the city. Plenty of Gluhwein and Punsch, Schnitzel, Beer and cakes :-) But you can see all that on the photos soon I’m sure. I’m going to hand over to Sar to write anything she likes now, will blog here again soon.

It’s our last few hours in Vienna and I’m a little sad.  I’ll miss the beautiful buildings and  the hustle and bustle of the city.   Like Alex mentioned,  we’ve seen everything we hoped to….plus much, much more.   We’ve averaged between 3-4 attractions per day![Have a look at the blisters on my feet to confirm this - Alex]   Vienna is quite a compact city so we walked to and from all-but-one attraction.   We must have covered miles in our week away.   It’s certainly taken it’s toll on our feet.   I think a pedicure, manicure and massage are needed when we get home!

I’m glad we have a huge collection of photographs to bring back home (though I suspect we’ll bore people rigid with over 200 of them!!).   I also have a big fat tummy to bring home also.   The food and drink here is beautiful,  but it’s fried, rich and full of cream.   I’m craving a salad!

I am in some ways looking forward to going home.   I love new experiences,  but I miss the familiarity of home.  I certainly miss looking at a menu (or food in a supermarket) and knowing what it is.   It’ll be wonderful to see family and friends again and have a good catch up.  I’m especially missing Mits and Tosca.  I dread to think what sort of welcome we’ll get.  In my head they’ll be really glad to see us and it’ll be time for lots of fuss.   Knowing them,  it’ll be an hour or so of the cold shoulder, then perhaps,  if they are hungry,  a little fuss :-)

See you all soon

Vienna – Day 1 (pre flights)

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Well, our holiday is off to a flying (or not as it were) start. There was an accident at Birmingham Airport last night when a Cessna pilot collided with the landing system antenna which closed down Birmingham airport until noon today (we were due to depart at 0730). KLM have rescheduled us to be on a different flight, and all in all we are only arriving in Vienna 2 hours later. However it sucks in our instance as my brother (a pilot for KLM) had gone to lots of effort to change his duty rosta so that he could be piloting part of our journey and Sarah was going to go sit in the cockpit with him for a jumpseat flight, however since Damon is no longer doing the flight that won’t be happening anymore, which Sar was really looking forward to. In fact she’s a little upset now as she’s not certain if she will ever get the opportunity again given how infrequently we fly KLM, the uncertainty of my brother actually having our flight, and the increasing rules and restrictions on flights. Still at least on the whole it shouldnt affect our holiday too much. My only concern now is that the local shops in the area will still be open after we arrive, as we need to get food and supplies for the apartment and all the travel brochures we have read indicate that the shops will not be open on Sunday.

Sucks again about the flights though. I was looking forward to seeing my bro, and I’m pretty certain he’s put out too after all that effort and now he’s ‘on call’ in Amsterdam after his flights to BHX were cancelled. Which reminds me, I was mildly annoyed at the KLM rep I spoke to this morning when I rang to check what was happening about my flights

“When’s your flight?”

“07:30 from BHX to AMS”

“It’s been cancelled”

……silence for a second or two…….

“….so what are you going to offer me…”

“oh, let me check. *tap tap tap* You’re already been booked onto a later flight *details*”

No apologies ‘sorry, your flight has had to be cancelled’ or anything. Just a weird, awkward ‘cancelled’ as if it was somehow my fault. I mean, I know KLM aren’t to blame for this either, but they could at least have some sympathy for their customers with disrupted holidays.

Vienna soon

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Its not long at all now until we will be on our way to Vienna – only around 20 hours :-)

I’ll try to take lots of pictures along the way and upload them to the website if we get the internet for free at our apartment. :-) Otherwise I’ll do the uploading when I get back. We’ve got the HD Camcorder, a good quality compact camera, and the laptop with us.

Yey for holidays. I could really do with some time off work at the moment. Its been quite a while since my last holiday :-P
