Quick Post

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Hey everyone. This is just a quick post as I’m popping out to get some lunch in a moment and I dont want this to take up too much of my lunch break :-)
It’s now been 40 hours since I last ate something, so it’s time to grab a bite to eat I think.

Had a lovely weekend back up in Yorkshire for my mother’s birthday. We went up to the lake district for a pint (pretty much in the end :-D ) and stopped in at Lancaster on the way back home. It was nice to look around the place again. A few things have changed but not much. It’s slightly bizarre to be back there to be honest. I even went for a walk around of the university grounds with Sarah, although it was quite quiet as I think we are in non-term-time at the moment. All in all a lovely weekend however, and we are due back up north for the Yorkshire Game Fair in a couple of weekends time.

Photographers and colds

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Well I’m just getting over a bad cold at the moment. It hit me on Monday really and hit me quite hard, but it is starting to tail off finally, just in time for Sarah’s birthday party this weekend. I have a few special plans up my sleeve, although one of them looks like it won’t be possible at the moment as some key things I needed to be sent (as I don’t have it myself) has not arrived. Sorry I know that’s quite cryptic, but I know that Sarah reads my blog from time to time so I don’t want to spoil a surprise if it actually manages to happen.

Well, it’s been a slightly busy week this week (and will be for a few more weeks) as we begin our hunt for a wedding photographer. We have been to see a few different people now in order to get a good idea of what kind of photography style each does and what they offer and for how much. It’s also important to us that we get a photographer we get along with and someone we feel we like as a person as well as a photographer. We’re really hunting for people who are good at rapport / candid shots and can blend into the guests seamlessly and get good photos of the day. I’m not really a big fan of posed shots (I even try to avoid them in my own pictures) as they just seem like forced stills throughout the day, but unexpected / candid pictures feel to tell much more of a story to me. It shows people as they were at the time, much more relaxed and actually doing what they were doing on the day, not standing in a big crowd smiling at the cameraman (although we do want the traditional photos too). We also consider full copyright/ownership of ALL the digital photographs a must as part of the package, and have removed any photographers from the list who don’t offer that or aren’t willing to offer that. We have seen a couple of photographers now and both have been very good, but one stands out to us a lot more, however we have about another 10 to speak to at some point (one is even giving us a telephone meeting as they are in Dorset but cover all of the UK with no transport cost).

We also have Sarah’s birthday coming up tomorrow. I’m really happy that a lot of Sarah’s friends are able to make it to the party, so it should be great. Its the big 30 – so it has to be special as far as I am concerned. We’re going out for some cocktails for a few hours before heading over to a lovely Thai restaurant for an evening meal together. Then the end of the evening still remains unknown. It depends on the guests really. We could stay at the restaurant and drink, or head across the road to a bar or we could call it a night. I’m hoping to go snap happy for most of the evening though and take a huge number of pictures, so if I do actually remember to do that I’ll put the pictures on the website soon. My only problem really (with cameras) is that I am so fully involved and enjoying the evening itself that I don’t tend to think about stopping from time to time and getting a picture (plus it spoils the mood for me a little- if an exciting thing is happening to be stood back a bit trying to picture it rather than enjoying it and getting excited with it too). Still I know everyone (myself included – and I certainly hope Sarah included) is going to have a wonderful evening.

Birthday approaching

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Well, my birthday is approaching once again. 25 this year. Everyone keeps talking about their 25th birthday as a major landmark date for them, which made them start to feel old. To be honest, I dont really have any odd feelings about this birthday. I don’t really feel any older than I did about a year or so ago, so I don’t really see how it changes anything that much (except now being able to hire cars abroad much easier).

I have put my birthday list on the website as usual (in case anybody is wanting a list, as I get asked each year, but I dont think anyone actually looks on here :-D ). I’ve tried to keep most of the prices on there quite low. There are a couple of pricier items for anyone feeling overly generous or (more likely) if anyone wants to team up with someone else and get a joint item.

I know Sar keeps telling me she has already got my present. I have no idea what it is, although I know where it is hidden in the house, and I’m not looking in advance. I quite like the surprise, so I shall wait :-) Absolutely no idea what it will be though.

I’ve started working on my video editing skills in preparation for a visit from my parents this weekend. Its actually not quite as bad as I thought it would be, and there are lots of very handy keyboard shortcuts for a lot of things when you start to get used to the software. I’ll also have to make sure I set up my father’s iPod to subscribe to my RSS feed. I’d like to think there are some people out there who may read this (as boring as it may be – sorry about that). So please, if you would like to follow me too. I know I tend to write on here quite infrequently, and so its not worth checking the blog all the time, but if you subscribe to my RSS feed, you won’t get any spam or anything like that. its not how mine is set up to work. It will simply let you know whenever I post a new blog entry, and will load the blog entry for you to read. Thats it :-) It saves you having to come and check for new entries. It will let you know when they are made. There should be an RSS feed link at the bottom of the page, or you can navigate to my blog (www.alexander-smith.co.uk/blog) with your RSS feed reader and ‘detect RSS feeds’ on the page, which will pick it up automatically for you.

I’ve also started working on wiring up a cooling system to my TV cabinet at home. My prototype device (a 14cm computer case fan combined with an old mobile phone charger) worked very well, and quietly. So next I need to order 2 silent case fans, pick up some electrical wire and a switch, then combine them all together and screw the fans into the back of the TV cabinet.

Birthday

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Well, it’s my birthday today!

Only in work for a half day (long enough to bring people cakes etc, and then head home and play some Fallout :-D ). Due to head back to work for about 4:45 though so that I can get a lift into town to go see ‘Inglorious Basterds’ at the cinema with Matt, Chris and Sarah. After that we’ll be heading over the Island Bar to sample a few of their cocktails, and then over to La Tasca with Sarah to have tapas. :-)

Helped Sar spec up a new laptop last night which she has ordered. Also been looking into improving the internet and wireless connectivity at Sarah’s parents house ready for when the laptop arrives. :-D
