Guests and BBQ

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Just had a wonderful weekend here in Birmingham with mum, dad and granddad who came down to visit us on Saturday afternoon. We had a nice trip out to see a new garden centre which everyone in accounts at work has been raving about (although I can’t say I’m overly impressed with the place, but I’m glad I’ve given it a try), followed by a lovely meal out with Sarah’s parents and nan at the Bell in Belbroughton. We’ve been to the pub a few times and it has always been very nice, and we’ve had a couple of desserts there before too which have been wonderful, although I have to admit I felt slightly let down by the meal on Saturday – nothing majorly wrong with any of the food or anything, just small little things that shouldnt have been the case (soggy chips, waitress reguarly forgetting drinks orders, or at least forgetting to bring them back to the table in any kind of timely manner). On the Sunday we also went over to the Botanical gardens for a nice stroll around the grounds (between the rain – which is a big shame as the previous few weekends have been gloriously hot down here) and managed to get quite a few of the birds to talk back to us by playing some bird calls of their species to them from my phone via YouTube. The peacock in particular became a lot more vocal after hearing recordings of his own call played back to him.
We then all went to my company’s summer BBQ which was on in the evening with free food and drink (although it was nice to see no one really overindulged on this. I only had about 2 ciders for instance and I think most people were the same). We walked down to work from where we live (about a 20 minute walk) and had a good evening really – aside from having to stay inside the marquee rather than be outside thanks to more rain. A lot more people turned up for the BBQ than generally attend work events too, which was quite nice to see. It did mean we spent some time talking to people that we don’t often see from the office rather than being able to just sit with parents (once we finally managed to get a seat). Then we headed home for a night in with wine and the laptop looking at French holidays.

Sarah and I have been planning on taking a cheap holiday into France this year in order to get away to warmer climes but without having to spend too much money on the holiday so that we can continue to save up for our honeymoon and the wedding. Whilst we were looking around for these holidays and chatting about them with parents on phone calls home Mum and Dad also expressed an interest in a cheap holiday this year (since they already went away on a main holiday at the start of the year) and mentioned that Dad had been wanting to see France for a while now – so we have been looking at getting a slightly larger cottage somewhere in France and going together. We may have found a particular place that we all like yesterday evening and have sent the owners and email to make arrangements for booking – if everything goes through with no problems then Sarah and I need to look into booking a week off work on the 10th September (which will be VERY nice – we could both really do with a real holiday away from work and household jobs).

Isaac’s christening, Dad’s move, Car thoughts

Hey everyone,

Well I guess to start I should mention Tosca. We are coping with her loss now and have started looking back on her with fond memories and happiness of the time we had together. We still miss her and I’m sure we always will, especially given how short her time with us really was (2.5 years is quite short really for a cat), but she had such personality and has left such an impression on our lives that we could never forget her and can always tell what she would have done if she was still around to experience life with us. Mits (our other cat) seems to be coping well with the loss. I think that him seeing her towards the end, and seeing her separate from us all means he knows very well what happened to her. From what Sarah tells me about Mits and Tosca’s last few minutes at home he wouldn’t leave her side most of the time she was in the house, but when she went to separate herself and flopped down in the kitchen Mits had stayed behind in the living room (meanwhile Sarah was getting the cat basket out of the loft to rush her to the emergency vets). To be honest – we kept Mits inside for a week or so after the incident just in case it was malicious, and Mits seemed to pine for the outdoors a lot more than anything else. He’s now back to his usual self.

My nephew was Christened this weekend at the church where my brother and his wife (Isaac’s parents) got married. Marcus and Wendy had asked myself and my other brother Damon to be godfathers to Isaac which was very kind of them – and Isaac was as good as gold for the whole ceremony. He managed to fall and bump his head leading to some tears just before the service started, but a few seconds after it began he sat quietly all the way through. We then went to a nearby pub for post-christening celebrations with all the family (both sides of course) which was wonderful. The weather was glorious and everyone was in a great mood. Isaac enjoyed playing in the play area most of the time, and seemed to really enjoy playing on the slide :-) I’ll try to remember to get the videos and pictures off my camera and link to them on the site shortly.

Dad’s company is moving premesis quite soon, which should be nice for them since the old place was a little dark and cold, and a tad awkward to find (although I haven’t seen the new place yet I have to admit :-) ) but to help them with the move Sarah and I are going to be heading up again this weekend in order to help with all the odd jobs that need doing around the new place before they can move in – painting, sorting out the carpets, fitting tables etc.
It’s lead to quite a busy week for us (we only had Tuesday evening free this week – which we also filled with doing the house chores) but it should be good. Plus I like the idea of an industrious weekend, as a lot of weekends seem to just pass us by.

I’ve been briefly toying with the idea of changing my car again and going back to an MX5 (perhaps Mk2 this time) however I’ve been to get a valuation on my current car which only came through at £400, and so I don’t think its going to be something we could necessarily do for a long time – by which point I imagine we may be starting to think about a family and the car would not be doable all together for several more years. I may go and have a look at a few garages and see what arrangements I might be able to come to with regards to using the old car as p/x and taking out finance for the difference between the old and the new car, but I shall really have to see. With the wedding coming up – plus us saving for a house – I don’t want to commit myself to too much of an additional overhead.
I’ll keep you posted

Wales and Yorkshire

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Well Sarah and I have had a lovely couple of weekends. First we went to Wales for a nice (and very sunny) weekend away together. We set off early on Saturday morning and headed across to a village named Portmeirion – setting of ‘The Prisoner’ TV Show. It was a very beautiful village, and very relaxing too. We were aware that it was an anniversary of the construction of the village (which was not built for the TV show but prior to it) however to celebrate this there was (unknown to us) a ‘Prisoner’ convention going on at the weekend too, with lots of scenes from the TV show being acted out around the village and lots of people in costume walking around (black blazers with a white edging). I didn’t understand many of the references having not seen the prisoner myself, but the atmosphere was electric with the enjoyment and excitement to all the convention goers. Which made it all the more enjoyable to be there. Thanks to this convention and the anniversary, accommodation in Portmeirion itself was far too expensive, however we stayed at a very nearby village named Porthmadog which was extremely close by and very pretty. We had lunch on the Black Rock Sands beach from a local award winning fish and chip shop, and we played around on the sand in the car, which was very enjoyable.
We had an early night that evening in the B&B as a combination of the early start, lots of walking and activities, and all of the sun had really tired us out.

The next morning (another moderately early start) we left Porthmadog and headed north east to Beddgelert. This village is the setting of a (supposedly true) legend of a regional King and his hunting dog Gelert. I had heard the story before however the name meant nothing to me. The story says that the king set out hunting one day from his lodge, however Gelert, his favourite hunting hound, was not with them for an unknown reason. Upon returning from the hunt Gelert came bounding out to meet the king covered in blood. Fearing the worst the king rushed into the lodge to check on his infant child. The infant child’s room was covered in blood and the cot was knocked over and the king could not find the baby. In shock and anger the king drew his sword and stabbed Gelert in the side. The dying cry/yelp let out by the dog caused the infant to start crying, and the king rushed over to discover his infant child safe in the room beside the body of a large wolf, which Gelert had fought and killed to protect the child. Realising what had happened and what the king had done, Gelert was given a special burial and his story became legend. It is also claimed the King never smiled again.
We went to visit this grave site, which is in the middle of a large field beside a stream, under the shade of two trees with a plaque depicting the story. There is a structure very close by with a dogs statue in it, however I am not certain what this structure is as of yet, as it would appear to be too small to be the kings hunting lodge. Perhaps just the room in which the incident apparently occurred??

From Beddgelert we travelled north to Llandudno. We arrived around 10:30am (late morning) and wandered down the promenade towards the grand pier. We took the tram up the hillside to the summit, and then took the cable cars back down to get a better view across the area. It was still a lovely sunny day, although a little cold with the wind up on the summit. After that we decided to leisurely start the journey home. The original (mostly motorway) route we had planned was extremely busy with huge queues right from the start of the journey, so we decided to head through snowdonia national park again for the return journey and return to Birmingham on a similar route we took to get to Portmeirion on the Saturday morning, as this was mostly country roads.
It was also quite nice to end the weekend on a relaxing countryside drive home rather than solid motorway journeys, so I’m quite glad we did detour for the journey home. It really kept the feel of the weekend.

This weekend we went to Yorkshire to visit my parents, and went to Fountains Abbey on the Saturday to look around and have a nice countryside walk around the ruins. The abbey is in surprisingly (to me) good condition and is still standing tall. The walk around the gardens and the woods around the Abbey was very enjoyable too, offering a nice sunny stroll and a lovely overlook of the Abbey itself.
We finished Saturday with a quiet drink at a local pub – which unfortunately left me with a slight hangover the next morning (I blame the alcohol combined with the sun all day for dehydration – as we didn’t drink that much).

The next morning Sarah and I joined dad for some clay pigeon shooting at his local club. We both did terribly, but we had a lot of fun. I used to be quite competent (but never competition standard) at it, but it would seem the adage of practice has some truth to it :-) But as I say, we both had a wonderful morning. It was also nice to get some fresh air when the hangovers.
After the shooting we returned home and I cooked my parents a light chicken and Parma ham meal for dinner which I picked up a while ago from my Jamie Oliver podcasts. After which we sat in the sun for a little while before assembling a new gas BBQ which parents had bought on the possibility of having a BBQ in the glorious sun at dinner time. Unfortunately the regulator which comes with the BBQ did not fit dad’s gas canister, so we went out to a few camping shops (just dad and I) and managed to find a matching regulator for the canister. We then got some meat and returned home, by which time Marcus, Wendy and Isaac had arrived to visit. We had also really hoped to see Claire and George  (Damon was out of the country), however once parents had returned from their usual Sunday morning activities (dad shooting, which Sar and I joined him for – and mum at the gym) and we had eaten dinner, it was already around 1pm. Unfortunately I didn’t think to get in touch with Claire a lot earlier in the week as she already had plans to see her parents for tea that day at around 4pm, and with Marcus also coming over to visit at 3 it didn’t work out possible for us to get over and visit. Dad was originally thinking of driving over and bringing Claire and George around to join us all for the BBQ and then driving them home afterwards, but we didn’t want to impinge on her current plans with her parents. Mum and Dad are planning on popping over to see everyone next week however and hopefully Sarah and I will catch up with them when we are next up (the weekend after mother’s birthday).
It was lovely to see Isaac, Wendy and Marcus again that evening. Isaac has also grown quite a lot since we were last up to see him. He is now saying a few words and very competently walking around (and occasionally falling over things). It is one of the shames of living so far away from everyone. I don’t get to see either of my nephews as often as I would like to. However I wouldn’t want to trade my Birmingham life either. Especially as Sarah’s family is here too and I wouldn’t want to pull Sarah away from her family. Its only 2 hours north so its not far, its more just having the weekends free to visit. We’re not close enough to just make quick pop-in trips. Plus the advantages of Birmingham life with regards to services (shopping, Internet, etc) whilst also having quite a lot of countryside around us.

All in all a great couple of weekends away. I managed to get sun burnt a little bit on the last day in Yorkshire, which I am still feeling on my left arm at the moment, and despite creaming up as soon as I got back from clay pigeon shooting. However the morning sun had already done its work by that point.

The Godfather

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

I’m very honoured to have been asked to be my nephews godfather at his Christening in a few months time. Marcus gave me a phone call a few days ago to ask if I would be willing, and I’m very much looking forward to it. We also got sent a lovely picture of Isaac to put up in the house, which is currently up in our living room.
So in a few months time it will be a weekend up in Yorkshire with a church service in the middle :-)

In a related note – as I’m sure you are all aware – it is pancake day today (Shrove Tuesday being the connection). I’m having a couple of friends over this evening to have pancakes together, then a bit of TV or gaming or something whilst Sarah pops over to her parents house to study (I didn’t kick her out – she wanted to go. I even offered to not do the gathering but Sarah was insistent that I still have people over). We’ve also had the photograph from our professional photoshoot arrive through the post (finally) so many of you that I know will probably see that up around our house whenever you are next around.

The next thing on our agenda really is to find a new home. We are looking at moving out when our contract expires in order to get a 3 bedroomed property. With the wedding and everything else on at the moment we could really do with the extra room for guests and it would also be nice to have a change of scenery and a little more space in the house. I’m very much wanting to keep a study/office room, but I also want to have a permanent spare bed for when people come to sleep over. It’s more comfortable for them, and it’s a lot easier for me too than having to pull out the futon and make the bed and everything. Plus we’re both very much wanting a house with a fixed eating area. Not necessarily a dining room, but a kitchen diner, or a dining space in the living room. Somewhere we can have a fixed table and chairs out, rather than eating on our knees or using the central coffee table in the living room. Again – it would also be very useful when we have guests to have somewhere we can actually sit to eat.
