Birthday coming up soon

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Only 12 more days until my birthday now :-) I’m going out for drinks on the Thursday of next week, then heading out for a meal on the Friday evening, driving up north to see family Friday evening and then a meal out with family on the Saturday – so I’m certainly getting my times worth for my birthday this year (it would appear :-D ). I’ll be taking a lot of pictures on the different days and will upload them to the website (especially since uploading to the website is a built in feature of my phone now). Looking forward to everything at the moment though – I’ll have to make sure not to go too mad with any of the days however as I dont want to undo all of the hard work I’ve put into dieting so far. I’ve lost a whole BMI point since I started checking my measurements (which wasnt at the start of the diet) and have lost around 1st in weight since that time too, so all in all I think it is going rather well :-) I am getting the occasional craving (usually for creamy items – like Mac&Cheese – which I don’t even usually eat – and Spagetti Carbonara) but they aren’t especially powerful cravings so I’m not finding it too bad keeping away from them. I’m also happy to have found (a while ago) that the ‘Zero’ versions of soft drinks are allowed in the diet too. I always used to drink zero anyway so I really like the flavours and they almost add in a dessert/treats feel to the diet without actually adding on a load of calories.

Sarah and I have signed up for our first couple of St John duties, the first of which is coming up at the end of the month as we are coving the second half of the cricket at Edgebaston cricket ground on Saturday 27th August. I’m a little nervous about our first duty – I mean, I think we are medically prepared for it and everything, but it’s still the daunting task of getting used to how we are supposed to react to certain situations with regards to ‘red tape’ and dealing with real situations rather than example situations in which everyone is co-operative and happy to sit down or lay on the floor :-) Still – I shall let you know how it goes. I’m looking at picking up a pair of steel toe capped boots if possible too to prevent anyone standing on my toes or anything :-) Sarah’s dad mentioned that he may have a couple of spare pairs from when he worked at Triplex (glass factory) so I’ll have to check his shoe size :-D We also have our AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training here at work this Wednesday which should be interesting. It’s a SJA course too – so once I have passed the course for work it will also count towards my training with SJA. Sarah is also on the course here at work too so will get it marked as completed for her too :-)

We also have the next LAN party coming up at the end of the month too. Stu and Phil will be back over with their PS3s and TVs to play Brink in 4 player over the Sunday evening through to the bank holiday Monday (28th – 29th August) which should be good fun. Its been a little while since our last LAN party – however with Sarah having an accountancy exam at the end of this week, and my birthday being the weekend after – this is the closest we could arrange one (which is handy as we’ll also be going on holiday to France during September, so that will be a more difficult month to try to plan a LAN party in :-)

Family visit and PS3 lan parties

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Well we’ve had a lovely time since I last posted on here. We’ve had our first PS3 LAN party with 2 friends from work last weekend. Everyone brought their own TV and PS3 with them and we lined the wall of the living room with the TV sets to sit down and play a 4 player LAN Co-operative game (Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising). We had a great evening and managed to complete the game within 15 hours :-) .
Stuart and Phil from work were our medic and rifleman (respectively) with Sarah manning the Auto Rifleman role and myself as the Leader. There were some stressful moments with bugs in the game (for instance you can fire a shoulder mounted rocket launcher into a tank 3 times with each being a hit and exploding on the tank, but it doesnt seem to damage it unless you are stood at exactly the same height as the tank when you fire – and even then it still did no damage quite often. This problem in particular made the final mission (where you have to destroy 3 vehicles) very very difficult and took a lot longer than it should have. but still a wonderful evening. We really enjoyed ourselves. Tosca also seemed to take a special shine to Phil bringing him a small present from the garden and curling up between Phil and myself on the sofa whilst putting her paw in my hand.

On a similar note, my brother Marcus, sister in law Wendy and my nephew Isaac all came to stay at our house last night on their way down to Devon for a weeks holiday. It was wonderful to see them again, and their first visit to our house down in Birmingham. We’ve loved having them over and would love to have them again at some point, so we can hope they fancy a weekend in Birm or something in the near future.
We had a lovely evening in playing a couple of roundsĀ of Gran Turismo 5, watching some TV shows and looking through bizarre but comical YouTube videos on the TV – accompanied by wine and dip of course :-)
We could really do with getting the new sofa bed we’ve had our eyes on for a while in the near future so that we have more comfortable accomodation for guests when we have them around (parents, brothers, friends,…) however with the Download festival coming up next month, and the cost of the sofa bed we have our eyes on (-which is actually quite cheap for a sofa bed I might add – but that still isnt cheap) it may be a while before we have been able to save up for it. I’m also hoping for a 32″ TV for the office to use on the desktop computer, however that one may be a long time coming. I should point out at this moment in case my lovely fiancee reads this (to prevent a telling off) that we are also saving for a house and the wedding, which i havent forgotten about and very much takes the priority. Which is an extra reason these things are taking longer to save up for – as there is only a limited amount of ‘luxury spending money’ that we each have to put to one side each month.

FFXIII

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Well, I finished final fantasy XIII earlier today, just have a lot of side quests to polish up now that the story is over. :-( plus all the grinding to get the trophies completed as well. It’s a bit of a shame really, I think I’ll miss the story line to be honest, it was good, fun and engaging and it was doing it’s job of keeping me in in the evenings in order to save money, however the extra side quests and trophy hunting should keep me busy for a while. Plus I have yet to start playing Uncharted 2 which came free with the new ps3 slim.

Got quite a bit of gardening work I would like to get done this weekend too (if the weather holds). Did the first lawn mow of the year today and weeded the herb garden. Want to relay the front garden border beside the driveway tomorrow amongst other things though :-)

Rock Night

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Had a great evening with friends on Rock Band last night. It has been a while since our last Rock Band evening, so it was nice to revive it and have a bit of fun together again. Picked up a few new songs this time also, which is bringing the list of playable songs to quite a large number now :-)

Unfortunately the snow made popping to the shops more challenging, so we decided to order take-away pizzas, however we ran out of coke during the evening so had to pop out to the shops anyway. My only disappointment for that is that (given the offers at the supermarket) if we had all pooled money together [like paying for the take away] we could have bought nearly 40 pizzas for the same price as we paid for 3 pizzas, 2 chicken wedges combos, 1 potato wedges and 2 bottles of coke. Which comes to my main dislike of take-away food. Its so very expensive compared to what I could pick up from the supermarket at the same price. Still, it is in no way a downer on the evening, I had a great time, and look forward to our next get together.

Managed to clock in about an hour or two of Gran Turismo 5 with Stuart in the evening also (as he was staying over), which added a nice variant on to the end of the day.
